Thriving as a Freelance Web Developer While Job Hunting: A Personal Journey

First and foremost, it's essential to identify your target client. For me, it's the average person with a small business – someone who might be cutting grass, doing plumbing, or handling electrical work independently. These individuals don't need a feature-rich website but still require an online presence because, in today's digital age, potential customers often search for businesses online.

I've faced criticism for not targeting larger clients who could pay more, but my goal is to gain experience and help those who aren't tech-savvy. These small business owners don't need to pay for a subscription service like Wix or WordPress. They need a simple website built with HTML, CSS, and maybe a bit of JavaScript, which they can use without worrying about frequent updates.

Generating Leads

1. Nextdoor App

One effective way I've found to generate leads is through the Nextdoor app. There seems to be low competition in my area, making it a fertile ground for finding clients. I make regular posts about my web services and look for posts from people needing yard work, electrical work, plumbing, roofing, and other services. When I see someone offering these services, I reach out to them, introduce myself, and explain how I can help them save money with a simple, effective website.

2. Google Maps

Another strategy I use is searching for small businesses on Google Maps. I look for businesses that don't have a website attached to their Google Business page. If they don't, I either call them or send an email, offering my services at an affordable rate. My basic package starts at $250, including an "About Me" page and other essential features. My aim is to save people money while providing a functional online presence.

The X Factor: Personalized Service

What sets me apart is my commitment to helping clients host their websites. I take the time to show each client how to manually deploy the website I create for them on Netlify. This not only saves them money but also empowers them with the knowledge to manage their website independently.

Organizing and Tracking Leads

I keep track of my leads using a Google Sheet. I log details about who I contacted, whether they responded, and the outcome of each interaction. This helps me stay organized and follow up effectively.

The Benefits

This approach has been invaluable. I'm gaining experience, making B2B sales, earning some income, and building connections in various industries. While there's still room for growth and streamlining my processes, this method has proven beneficial during my job hunt.
